Following the extension of the ceasefire agreement between Israel and Lebanon, Israeli forces and Hezbollah launched attacks against each other.

Despite the extension of the ceasefire agreement between Israel and Lebanon , fighting continues; the Israeli military launched a series of large-scale airstrikes on southern Lebanon on Saturday, while Hezbollah also claimed responsibility for attacks on Israeli military targets in the north.

According to reports from AFP and Xinhua, Israel claimed that the targets were Hezbollah , but had issued evacuation warnings for nine villages in Lebanon before launching the airstrikes on Saturday (May 16).

The Lebanese National News Agency reported that more than 20 villages were attacked on Saturday, including one more than 50 kilometers from the border. In addition, large numbers of residents flocked to the southern Lebanese city of Sidon and the capital Beirut.

Hezbollah in Lebanon issued a statement on Saturday claiming to have struck military targets in northern Israel.

The statement said that Hezbollah fighters launched multiple attacks on Israeli forces stationed in southern Lebanon and occupying territory near the border between the two countries, and then used a “large number of attack drones” to attack the Yara military camp in northern Israel.

In addition, the Israeli Defense Ministry issued a statement on Saturday saying that an Israeli military commander was killed in an attack in southern Lebanon on Friday. Israeli media reported that the commander was killed by a Hezbollah drone strike.

Israel's public broadcaster reported on Saturday that a Hezbollah drone launched on Friday struck Israeli troops operating in an Israeli-controlled "safe buffer zone" near the Litani River in southern Lebanon, killing a commander and slightly injuring another soldier.

The report also stated that since the outbreak of this round of conflict between Israel and Hezbollah in Lebanon, 20 Israeli soldiers have been killed in southern Lebanon.

With the mediation of the United States, Israel and Lebanon began a 10-day temporary ceasefire on April 17 , and US President Trump announced on April 23 that the ceasefire would be extended for three weeks .

Lebanon announced on Friday that the third round of talks between Lebanon, the United States, and Israel in Washington achieved "diplomatic progress favorable to Lebanon," with all parties agreeing to extend the ceasefire for another 45 days.

However, since the ceasefire took effect, the Israeli military has launched airstrikes almost daily in southern Lebanon on the grounds that Hezbollah violated the ceasefire agreement, and has dismantled and destroyed so-called Hezbollah "military infrastructure" in the southern Lebanese areas it occupies.

Data released by the Lebanese Ministry of Health on Friday showed that since the resumption of fighting between Lebanon and Israel on March 2, Israeli attacks on Lebanon have resulted in 2,951 deaths and 8,988 injuries.
