Trump claims Israel and Hezbollah have agreed to a ceasefire.
US President Trump said on Monday that Israel and Hezbollah in Lebanon have agreed to a ceasefire, and indicated that negotiations with Iran are "moving rapidly."
According to AFP, Trump said on Monday (June 1) that he had spoken with Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu and had a "very good call" with Hezbollah through an unnamed representative.
Trump posted on social media that Netanyahu agreed to cancel the military raid on Beirut, and Hezbollah pledged to "stop all shooting" and that neither side would attack the other.
However, Israel subsequently appeared to have reservations about the ceasefire statement.
Netanyahu's office issued a statement saying that he had made it clear to Trump that if Hezbollah continued to attack Israeli towns and civilians, the Israeli military would strike "terrorist targets" in Beirut.
Trump then posted again, insisting that Netanyahu had ordered troops bound for Beirut to turn back, and reiterated that Israel and Hezbollah had agreed to a "ceasefire," adding, "Let's see how long this lasts—hopefully forever!"
Meanwhile, US media outlet Axios reported that Trump privately called Netanyahu "crazy" and accused him of jeopardizing peace talks with Iran. Previously, Iranian state media reported that Tehran had suspended dialogue with mediators due to its dissatisfaction with Israel's escalating offensive against Hezbollah.
Trump said negotiations with Iran are progressing rapidly. According to a report by ABC News on its X platform, Trump said on Monday that he believes an agreement will be reached with Iran "within the next week" to extend the ceasefire and reopen the Strait of Hormuz.
But in an earlier interview with US media, Trump said he "didn't care" if negotiations broke down, and described the negotiations as "starting to get boring."
